cassette recorders

There are cassette recorders for students to use in the Instructional
Media Collection department. Please steer students there or have them use Studio 6, the sound studio, to record to cassette (the instructor called saying that her students were told that there are none).

FAX anyone?

There's a website called faxzero <http://www.faxzero.com>
which allows users to fax up to 3 pages for free and up to 15 pages for
$1.99. Users can scan the document using the scanner/copiers or flat bed
scanners and then use the website. I helped someone this morning and it
only took him a couple of minutes to complete the process. (This link is
on the Q & A section of our website).

MatLab --Print to Adobe PDF to print

There has been a problem today and yesterday with students printing from
MatLab to the black and white printer. Print to Adobe PDF instead and
then print from Adobe and it will work. Incidentally, printing to the
color printer does work for this. This affects Dells and the Windows
side of the Macs.

Gaming systems in Instructional Media

There are 2 gaming systems in the Instructional Media Collection Dept.
for a Japanese culture class of 100 students. Because demand for the
gaming systems may be high, the students can take the games to the Hen
Zone in Perkins Student Center to use their gaming system. The library
has 40 games on Reserve for these students to check out.

Foreign language programs and Electronic Checklists

Just a recap of Rich and Diana's last entries on the SMDC blog. Students coming in looking for Foreign language programs (I know for French it is the FV French Verb program) should be redirected to 006 Jastak-Burgess Hall, where the Foreign Language Media Center is located (Near the Little Bob) http://www.udel.edu/fllt/main/FLMediaCenter/index.html.

Also, as you probably know by now, we have new electronic checklists for checking out kits. Although not every kit has been converted to this new system, almost all of them have been. To use the new system, you scan the kit's barcode (beginning with 31741) and you will see the checklist pop up on the screen. Its easiest to just remove all items from the kit, and as you scan them place them back into the case. Don't forget to ask if they need any of the additional items available for the kit when you are prompted by computer. A box pops up that asks if any additional items are needed, if so check the appropriate boxes, and if none are wanted then simply select "none."Once you have done this, you will be asked to type in your initials. After this, you must still check the kit out in Aleph.. DO NOT FORGET THIS! If a kit comes back with missing or damaged parts, find a supervisor.

EDUCAUSE 2009 Computer Security Awareness Contest

This contest was posted on the SMDC website. I entered the poster contest and ended up getting an honorable mention (Fantasyland-Get Real). I also noticed that the 2nd Place Video Contest Winners (Vanished Erased Gone) were UD students, Hillary Luvshis and Matt Crescenzo. I think it's really awesome that UD was represented in this contest. As a Visual-Comm major I know that contests such as this one are really appreciated by students, and I hope that we can continue to advertise similar contests on the SMDC page.
