NLM & You: The Video Contest

The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) is conducting a video contest that's open to the public to promote awareness of their products and services. Video entries should be 30-60 seconds in length and promote an NLM information product or service, such as Medline/PubMed, MedlinePlus, GenBank, PubMed Central, ClinicalTrials.gov, Bookshelf, AIDS Info, and Profiles in Science. In your video, you can show how an NLM product or service helped you:
·         Solve a health problem or enabled you to help a loved one
·         Carry out research or make a new discovery
·         Make a difference in clinical treatment or help a client or patient
·         Write a report

There will be one grand prize winner who will receive $1,000.00.  The videos of the grand prize winner and the runners up will be featured on NLM’s web site. The deadline to submit is 5:00 p.m. EST on March 31, 2011.

For full contest rules, go to http://challenge.gov/NIH/127-nlm-you-the-video-contest. If you have questions,  write to videocontest@nlm.nih.gov.

Good luck!

Roc and Myna: Browser-Based Music Creator and Audio Editor from Aviary.com

We've written about Aviary.com in the past, which is a free browser-based multimedia editing tool (which includes image, vector, and audio editing). Aviary.com has recently introduced a music creator called Roc, which you can use to simulate dozens of musical instruments including piano, guitars and drums to create musical loops and patterns. You can then use these clips in Myna, Aviary.com's audio editor, to remix music tracks and audio clips. The music and audio editors work very much like Apple's Garageband. Since it's all browser-based, you don't need to install any programs, and they work across platforms (Mac, Linux, and Windows). And best of all, it's free!

See how Myna works in the site's instructional YouTube video:

"Google Art Project: Like Street View for Museums"

Google Art Project, which just recently launched in London, brings together seminal works from 17 world class museums, including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMa, all in one online interactive portal. When you go to Google Art Project, you can view closeups of paintings (some of which are so detailed you can even see hairline cracks), walk through the galleries, and see how all of the artwork is displayed. Think of it as street view for museums. In addition to exploring museums from around the world, according to the site you can also "create and share your own collection of masterpieces."
