Locked iPads

Hey everyone,

Someone returned an iPad earlier tonight and she locked it so that no one else could access it. This is the first time that this problem as occurred, but we have to remember to also check the iPad to make sure it is not locked. Otherwise, the student may have forgotten to unlock it and we would not be able to restore factory settings. Not good. In the words of Diana, 'that is why the checklist is there.'

  1. I've read online that you can configure the iPad to erase itself if you put in the wrong passcode more than ten times. This is under settings > general > passcode lock. Otherwise, you have to use iTunes to restore the iPad. Apple suggests using the same computer you sync it with (Mac CNTR197).
This is potentially devastating if you haven't backed up your iPad, but since we wipe them anyway here, would this be a problem? Would this abandon the "restore to" date we have set up for it? Or could we just restore it to factory settings, then apply the restore to previous date option?

    1. Yes, you are correct. As far as I know, if we had a locked iPad, we could restore it to default using iTunes on the computer, than restart the computer, and run though the normal imaging process. Although it is always necessary to turn on the iPad during check-in to make sure it is not damaged, so ideally we will never find out if this works (but I am pretty confident it would).
