The introduction of this slideshow of images by U.S. military photographers states "These photos were chosen from thousands of entries and adhere to the same standards as photojournalism (meaning no posed or electronically manipulated images)."
Worth a look, this collection of images from the 2011 Military Photographer of the Year competition credits each photographer and his or her military branch but doesn't explain the scene. Some of the shots are technically interesting while others focus on very emotional subjects. With many of the action shots, one may puzzle over what technique the photographer used to capture it. Even without text, each tells a story. (Do still photos constitute "monomedia"?)
