CR2 to JPEG Conversion

Hey guys,

Today a patron came to the desk asking for help importing the pictures he took with one of our cameras. He was having trouble viewing the pictures he took because they were in the CR2 file format, a format not supported by programs such as Windows Live Photo gallery. The problem was that his Camera was set to take "Raw" pictures. Raw files are huge compared to the more condensed and common JPEG format. After a little help from Google and Lucky, we figured out an easy way to convert his photos to JPEG's.

The first step is to use a program called "Adobe DNG Converter" which is installed on all of the computers downstairs. First you have to select the folder containing the files you want to convert. Next step is to pick a folder to store your new files that will now be in the DNG file format. (I suggest just creating a new one for simplicity.) Once you have these two folders selected, extract the files.

Now your new DNG files will be in the folder that we assigned in step two above.

After this we need to use Adobe Bridge to to do our final conversion. When you open "Bridge" you are going to want to select all the pictures you need to convert to JPEG's and then press File -> Open. The computer will now open all of your files in photoshop in the "Camera Raw Window."  In order to convert all the pictures at once select "Select All" and then "Save Images." You should now see a window that looks like this:

Make sure to select a new folder for your JPEG's (once again I suggest  creating a new folder) and JPEG as your file format. Now click "save" and your files should be converted to JPEG's.

Hope this helps.
