I found this advice from Ira Glass (an American public radio personality and the host and producer of the radio and television show, This American Life) beneficial concerning storytelling.
1. Cut out the crap.
2. Put yourself on a deadline.
3. Force yourself to complete something every week.
4. No shortcuts for excellence
