iMovie: Finalize Project vs. Export Movie

Recently, a student came to the desk asking what to do in iMovie once they were finished editing their project. They were looking to get their finished movie file onto a hard drive. A logical answer might be to simply go up to File --> Finalize Project.

However, this option renders the movie in mobile, medium, large, HD 720p, and HD 1080p formats. As you can imagine this takes an unnecessarily long amount of time to accomplish when all you want is your movie in your preferred format.

So, it's recommended to instead go to Share --> Export Movie, and from there choose the desired format. This will just create one file instead of several, saving time.

  1. With so many people anxious to finish their projects, this is excellent advice to share with iMovie users.
